From Brussels to La Baule - international investment takes pride of place

Patrice Lefeu

Editorial by Patrice Lefeu, Managing Director of Europe+ Foundation, Executive Director of LA BAULE-WIC

For the first time, the European Commission's Régional Policy Directorate-General and the EU Committee of the Regions made international investment the central theme of this year's Open Days at the Week of European Regions and Cities in Brussels.
Investors' Cafe was the name given to this new concept designed to offer opportunities for networking and debate bringing together representatives of local and regional government with global business leaders and the heads of SMEs. Even if the format and pace have yet to strike exactly the right note and draw a wide audience, the initiative is very welcome and we can only applaud the real successes achieved.

The Europe+ Foundation made an active contribution, using its experience and expertise in issues relating to European attractiveness to organize several theme sessions. All told, 15 high-level international speakers provided their insights, taking as their leitmotif efforts to build a more effective international presence for Europe and its regions.

In the same vein, the 2006 La Baule World Investment Conference was dedicated to the theme "Making Europe a Hub for the World", a message that will also be the focus of the Europe+ Foundation's next report coming out in early December. This reflects the importance of what is at stake, since the greatest challenge for regions in all parts of the world, and in Europe in particular, is to build positions that enable them to make the most of economic globalization. The Foundation's 2006 report will set out 50 concrete measures and recommendations to raise awareness among European Community leaders, in particular the President of the Commission José Manuel Barroso and the next President of the European Parliament, as well as heads of government in Member States, unions, professional and employer groups, the press and, the first concerned, regional and local government leaders.

The conviction that we have consistently pursued since the first annual Conference four years ago and, more recently, the establishment of our Foundation, has lost none of its force. On the contrary. Every day, we see new evidence bearing out our belief that Europe will discover its true energy and develop the momentum for economic, social and environmental progress backed by effective innovation within its regions. Which means that by strengthening those regions, we will help to make Europe a hub for the world, with regions structured as focuses of competitiveness for worldwide reach, drawing energy from the complementary and coordinated support of endogenous and exogenous growth.
