Rough winds for Europe's buds of May
However grand and eye-catching the annual Europe Day ceremonies may be, they should not blind us to all the rest - to all the dithering and inaction that have entangled the process of European construction.
On May 9, all the peoples of the 25 EU Member States join in a well-rehearsed chorus to ensure that at least once a year unity prevails over selfish national interests, giving every one of their 450 million citizens an opportunity to feel a little more European than a year earlier. The mood is the same as at New Year's Eve - good resolutions are plentiful as the elation of the moment blurs perceptions of unpleasant realities and we look forward to new and much rosier tomorrows.
Yet today, the harsh reality is that the sense of belonging and the overriding importance of the common interest has deserted politicians of all persuasions, despite untiring the calls for unity from the President of the European Commission. Worse, fresh winds of nationalism are buffeting an already unsettled Europe, while the rest of the world, including Africa holds calmly on course for growth ...
